Icelandic Sheep, why are so unique?
Icelandic Sheep, a heritage breed, have evolved in relative isolation since Viking times, much like most creatures in Iceland. These resilient Icelandic sheep are well-adapted to endure the country’s harsh weather conditions.
During the winter months, there are approximately 500,000 Icelandic sheep in Iceland, increasing to around 800,000 during the summer. This means that there are more sheep in Iceland than there are people. Remarkably, Iceland has only one breed of sheep throughout the entire country—the Icelandic sheep.
Icelandic Sheep that are raised in Iceland are entirely free-roaming animals. Due to their natural behavior, they remain within regional areas. Moreover, given that Iceland is an island, these sheep cannot simply wander off. Unlike in America, Icelandic sheep face no natural predators in their environment. Icelandic sheep are utilized for their meat, milk & fiber. Nothing goes to waste.
These sheep rear their young naturally in the open lands and remain free until they are rounded up each fall. The annual round-up begins in September and can extend into early October.
Icelandic sheep are raised without the use of pesticides, herbicides, grain, commercial feedlots, GMOs, or hormones. Essentially, the sheep from which our Icelandic sheepskins originate are beyond organic.
While these exquisite creatures are most commonly white, it is also possible to find them in rare colors and patterns.
